It’s All about the Position

Deanna Goodson - 16 Feb 2009

Texas Hold’em players talk about maximizing your position – the relative location you are at the table with respect to the dealer button. Position is such a difficult concept to grasp especially when you’re new to the game. In this hand, from the World Poker Tour Borgata Poker, we see exactly how position can work to a player’s advantage.

Here’s the hand history:

Game Type: No Limit Texas Hold’em
Tournament: World Poker Tour Borgata Poker Open in Atlantic City
Players in hand: David Singer, Ricardo Festejo, Robert "Action Bob" Hwang

Starting Hands

Ricardo Festejo K, 6
Action Bob J, 9
David Singer J, 7
Al Ardebili K, 5

Pre Flop

Ricardo Festejo limps for $80k from the cut off.
Action Bob limps from button.
David Singer completes from small blind.
Al Ardebili checks his option from the big blind.

The Flop is A, A, 3

David Singer - spooked, checks as does Al and Ricardo Festejo.
Action Bob, living up to his name, is the last to act and does so. He bets $150k. Everyone folded to him.

Obviously by playing his position wisely, Bob took down this pot. Three players showed weakness in the face of a paired flop and Bob - with practically the worst hand, took down the first pot of the night for himself because he played position properly.
