TJ Cloutier Gets a Good Read on Phil Hellmuth

Henrik Kjellberg - 4 Sep 2008

TJ Cloutier is one of the toughest poker players in the world. A former football player who hit the road to gamble, TJ has amassed a fortune in the game. He's built himself up by his boot straps and earned the respect of nearly everyone in an industry that's difficult to do just that. TJ knows poker and everyone knows that TJ is a tough man to beat.

In this hand, we see TJ go up against Phil Hellmuth, another legend in the game. Unlike TJ, Hellmuth's been known to throw a tantrum or two at the table. This time, that kind of tactic wouldn't work.

Read on for a tough, solid and mean hand of poker...if you dare:

Game Type: No Limit Texas Hold’em
Tournament: Poker After Dark - Bracelets Week
Players in hand: Phil Hellmuth, TJ Cloutier

Starting Hands
T.J. Cloutier 9, 6
Phil Hellmuth A, T

PreFlop

Phil Hellmuth, one of the most cautious players of Texas Hold’em on the planet, and there is no doubt that if anyone knows what he is doing in these games, it is the Poker Brat. A pretty good hand, Ace and Ten, but it was a limp from the Madison kid.

If anyone is more cautious than Phil Hellmuth, it is this former road gambler, TJ Cloutier. T.J. took his weak hand and a free flop with a check.

The Flop
6, 2 J

Despite hitting mid pair T.J. was out of position and up against arguably the world’s best poker player in this format, so it was a check.

Nothing happening yet, so Phil checked.

The Turn
J

T.J. Cloutier: Well this didn’t help him much. It’s another check.

Phil Hellmuth - $2,500, says Phil, and fires it at the pot. Time to take it down.

Oops! T.J. makes the call.

The River
9

T.J. Cloutier - No need to get excited - check.
Phil Hellmuth - Well, he took a shot. That’s poker! Phil checked and shipped the pot.

TJ Cloutier talks about his Extra Sensory Perception (ESP). Maybe that’s what helped him ‘see’ through Hellmuth on this hand, or not:

Take on TJ Cloutier at DoylesRoom. On the last Saturday of September, Doyle and his crew are holding a $250,000 special event. Click here for more details!
