Going into the final hand, Jerry Yang had a 4 to 1 chip lead. The father of six looked down and saw a pair of eights (8
,8
) in the hole. So he raised the pocket pair up pre-flop. Tuan Lam, who was born in Vietnam and fled his homeland as soon as he was old enough to do so, went all in with A
,Q
. Yang thought for a second and made the call.
Yang was 53% to take the hand. As the players flipped up their hole cards, Lam waved the Canadian flag to drum up support for his cause. The flop came down 5
,Q
,9
. Lam went wild as he paired his queen. He could almost smell success in his grasp. Winning this pot would bring him close to even with Yang. After that, anything could happen. Who knows - he might achieve the unthinkable and defeat the unpredictable Yang?!?
Now, Yang found himself a big underdog with a 14% chance to win. He needed one of the remaining eights in the deck or runner, runner for an improbable straight. Yang looked sick. Despite his relative inexperience against the Canadian pro, he knew he was up against it. The turn brought a 7
, yielding Yang a few more outs. Either another 8 or a 6 would give Yang the improbable victory.
A 6
came on the river to give Yang the win and his American Dream.
Yang held the chip lead for much of the final table. A former refugee from Laos who became a social worker, Yang gave away nearly half of his 8 million plus in winnings to charity. His poker-playing style left many scratching their heads. He didn't match his success in 2008, but he's still a great ambassador for the game and a wonderful representative of Full Tilt Poker, where he continues to play online.
