All Africa Poker Champion shows No Fear and walks off with R1 Million Rand

The R3,500,000 All Africa Poker Tournament was held from 26th February to 1st March 2009 at Piggs Peak Hotel and Casino, Swaziland. The Tournament kicked off when 113 players took their seats to battle it out for the R1 Million Rand first prize.

After 20 hours of play over Thursday, Friday and Saturday and the exits of over a hundred players, the poker room erupted in applause as the Final Table was decided.  This came at the expense of “bubble” finisher Brian Welman, who was eliminated in 11th place.  Welman walked away with a free seat to the the All Africa Poker Tournament to be held in May 2009, as well as a Samsung Phone.

The Final Table consisted of Steven Brown, Frano Lottering, Jonathan Voss, Lino Pestana, Reshan Naidoo, Gareth “No Fear” Kalil, Aston Soon Shiong, Kevin Stani, Stewart Reilly and Deon Minnaar, who was the only player to have made a previous AAPT final table.

The heads up match featured Kalil who had a 2,160,000 chip stack against Jonathon Voss’ 985,000 chips. Kalil was crowned the winner when he made the best hand of 10, 10, 10, J, 8 winning with Trip 10’s.

Kalil, who is the 16th winner to join the All Africa Poker Millionaires Club, thanked everyone and was very humble in his victory and added, “Tonight promises to be the party of a life time at Piggs Peak Hotel and Casino, Swaziland.”

In addition to their share of three and a half million Rand, and top 5 receiving packages to the 2009 WSOP $10,000 Main Event, all the finalists each received a mobile phone sponsored by Samsung.

The next All Africa Poker Tournament will be held from 21st to 24th May 2009.  R1 Million Rand first prize and WSOP packages valued at R150,000 are up for grabs.  More details will be published by the end of this week.
