A total of 362 players put up their £10,000 to play in the 2008 World Series of Poker Europe Main Event. The name of the game was No Limit Hold’em and some of the best players in the world hit the rail over the four days before the final table was set including last year’s champion Annette Obrestad and former WSOP Main Event champions Doyle Brunson, Phil Hellmuth and Chris Ferguson among others. Mike Matusow, Andy Bloch, Erik Seidel and a slew of other pros made their mark in the tournament, but each fell short of the final table.
However, John Juanda, the former Bible salesman who was born in Indonesia, walked into the final table with the chip lead. The talented tournament player with more than seven million in earnings before the action began held tight and remained calm throughout the 22 hour ordeal. He outlasted his opponents, which included fellow professional players Daniel Negreanu and Scott Fischman as well as World Series of Poker final table mate Ivan Demidov, to make it all the way to heads-up play against Stanislav Alekhin.
Never once did the cool professional seem to break a sweat during the 242 hands of heads-up play. Never once did Juanda’s nerves appear to falter. Never once did he appear to go on tilt or lash out at his opponents. Juanda was a true gentleman, giving credit to the other players at the table and even joked upon winning his fourth World Series bracelet – and becoming the first American to win one on European soil – that “It’s so long ago when I won my last bracelet (2003) I can’t even remember. It’s embarrassing.”
Juanda takes home the title, the bracelet and more than $1.5 million for his efforts.
These are the final results:
1) John Juanda - $1,544,575
2) Stanislav Alekhin - $949,270
3) Ivan Demidov - $595,305
4) Bengt Sonnert - $492,680

6) Scott Fischman - $305,761
7) Robin Keston - $241,390
8) Toni Hiltunen – $193,112
9) Christopher Elliott - $144,871
