Betfair Poker Invites Olympic Golden Boy to WSOPE in London

Deanna Goodson - 3 Sep 2008

Michael Phelps is an Olympic legend. In Beijing this summer, he won eight gold medals. The media also announced that the 23 year old ‘human dolphin’ fancies himself a bit of a poker shark. As a result, he was invited to play in the APT Macau event, an invitation he turned down. However, he was “spotted playing poker at a Mayfair Casino following the Olympics after-party.”

That’s where Betfair stepped in. The sponsor of the 2008 World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) has encouraged Phelps to show off his poker skills against the crème de le crème of the poker world including last year’s Main Event champion, 19 year old Norwegian phenom Annette Obrestad. In a press release, they even offered to allow Phelps the privilege of wearing his “his famous LZR swim suit at the table, although organizers fear it may not give him the same competitive edge outside of the pool.”

So far, there has been no response from Michael Phelps.

The 2008 WSOPE will take place from September 19 – October 2 at the Empire Casino in Leicester Square (London).
