slaktarn Puts the Smack Down on Patrik Antonius Heads-Up at Full Tilt Pot Limit Omaha Tournament
Over the past weekend, September 6th and 7th, 2008 64 entrants took to the virtual felt at Full Tilt Poker for the $25,000 buy-in Pot Limit Omaha High Stakes Poker heads-up championship. The total prize pool was $1.6 million. Some of the best online and live action poker players in the world were in attendance. Only eight players made the money and were guaranteed no less than $96,000.
When the final four remained, the action ceased for a bit so the players could rest. Play resumed at 4pm ET on Saturday with Antonius taking on Urindanger and slaktarn, a Swedish player who often hits the high stakes tables, faced Ugadabugada. That match lasted only one hand. Antonius, who defeated Hac “trex313” Dang in the quarterfinals, knew he wouldn't have it easy in the semis.
As he wrote on his blog : "My opponent in the semifinals is 'Urindanger,' He is one of the best online players, and we have also battled in a few big pots in Bobby's Room. I am sure he is going to be ready for the challenge and try to get some revenge for his brother, whom I beat in the quarterfinals." Despite the difficulties, Antonius emerged victorious from that match and faced slaktarn in the finals.
However, he may have had some of the wind knocked out of his sails. The final heads-up match-up lasted only 30 minutes, and the Finnish poker icon was a slight underdog for most of the match. As the final hand approached, slaktarn held 9,655 chips to Antonius' 2,270.
Patrik raised the small blind, bringing the pot up to 300 after the flop hit J , 6 , 7 . Then, slaktarn began a raising battle with a re-raise of 250. The duo kept going until the Finn was all-in. slaktarn turned over J ,J ,8 ,Q , showing triple hooks. Antonius needed to complete an open-ended straight draw with A ,A ,10 ,9 (or catch another ace to hit a bigger set).
A 9 arrived on the turn, and a 5 came on the river, not giving Patrik what he needed to win the day. Instead, slaktarn's trips held up and earned her (?) the $560,000 first-place prize. Antonius would have to be content with the $320k runner-up cash.
