Thang Luu Takes $1,500 Omaha 8/b at 2008 World Series of Poker
As the $1,500 Omaha 8/b final table, the early focus was on one Scott Clements. Clements, who won the WPT's North American Poker Championship earlier this year, already has two WSOP bracelets, both in Omaha. The resident of Washington state started the day in the middle of the chip stack pack but lost two big pots early and hit the rail in a disappointing ninth place.
Since the name of the game was limit, the eliminations weren't fast and furious. Players saw more flops. Family pots and/or showdowns were seen more often than not. In fact, the tournament's eventual champ, Thang Luu, admitted that he likes “to play every hand. I don't miss any hands, especially when I am playing heads up. I might check in a few spots. But I play every hand (and try to keep my opponent guessing).” Luu feels that this style is well-suited to Omaha play and can't wait to play in next Sunday's next Omaha Hi-Lo tournament.
Luu, who has three other WSOP cashes on his resume, emerged victorious after a heads-up battle with Spencer Lawrence of London, England. Luu earned $243,342 as the winner of this record-setting event in which 833 total players took part.
These are the final results:
1) Thang Luu - $243,342 2) Spencer Lawrence - $156,344 3) George Guzman - $93,806 4) Jim Pritchard - $78,456 5) Chris Falconer - $64,243 6) Greg Jamison - $50,598 7) Craig Sabel - $39,228 8) Mark Wilds - $30,700 9) Scott Clements - $22,172
